Expansion of federal dental care plan means kids are now covered – Think Local

Kelowna’s Alpha Dental Centre is excited to announce its support for the newly expanded Canadian Dental Care Plan, which now includes children under 18 and adults with disabilities.

The expansion aims to remove financial barriers and ensure comprehensive dental care for all. Drawing from his experience in a low-income area in Edmonton, Dr. Kal Dhaliwal, owner of Alpha Dental Centre, has long championed the importance of accessible dental care. He warmly welcomes the plan’s extension, which initially benefited more than 250,000 seniors across Canada.

“We’re ready to welcome those who previously couldn’t afford regular dental visits,” Dhaliwal says. “Many seniors postponed necessary treatments due to financial constraints, but now we’re seeing them improve their oral health and regain confidence.”

Since the program’s expansion on June 28, approximately 25,000 children and 10,000 people with disabilities have applied for coverage, highlighting the significant demand for accessible dental services.

“Addressing dental needs early on prevents issues from escalating,” Dhaliwal says. “We’re prepared to help children and individuals with disabilities receive the care they deserve.”

Those who qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan must first apply through the Government of Canada’s website, where they can learn the full scope of benefits being provided before visiting their local oral health-care provider.

The expansion of the Canadian Dental Care Plan not only broadens access to essential dental services for children and adults with disabilities, but also provides dentists with a meaningful opportunity to give back to their communities.
