WELCOME BACK. OCTOBER IS BONE AND JOINT HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH HERE TO TALK MORE ABOUT. THIS IS A DOCTOR, JASON PERRY, WHO SPECIALIZES IN NON-OPERATIVE, ORTHOPEDICS AND SPORTS MEDICINE. DOCTOR PERRY, THANK YOU FOR FOR BEING HERE WITH US THIS MORNING. THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME. EXCITED TO TALK. SO I WANT TO GET INTO THIS BECAUSE I THINK WHEN YOU HEAR BONE AND JOINT HEALTH, YOU MAYBE THINK IT’S ONLY AFFECTS A CERTAIN CATEGORY OF PEOPLE, BUT IT’S ALL OF US REALLY. YEAH. FOR SURE. OUR BONE HEALTH IS IS CRUCIAL. YOU KNOW, IT IMPACTS OUR OVERALL OVERALL WELL-BEING AND OUR QUALITY OF LIFE AND, YOU KNOW, LOOK, OUR BONE SUPPORT, OUR STRUCTURE. THEY PROTECT OUR VITAL ORGANS. THEY SERVE AS A RESERVOIR FOR ESSENTIAL MINERALS LIKE CALCIUM AND PHOSPHORUS. THEY HELP OUR OUR BODY PRODUCE OUR RED BLOOD CELLS, OUR WHITE BLOOD CELLS, OUR PLATELETS AND MAINTAINING BONE HEALTH, YOU KNOW, REDUCES THE RISK OF FRACTURES AND A DECLINE IN OUR BONE MASS AS WE AGE. SO IT’S IMPORTANT THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE LIFE. SO WHAT CAN WE DO TO, YOU KNOW, JUST MAKE SURE THAT WE’RE GETTING THE BEST HEALTH WHEN IT COMES TO BONES, BONES AND JOINTS. LOOK, MAINTAINING OUR BONE AND JOINT HEALTH IS CRUCIAL. SO DOING THINGS LIKE WEIGHT BEARING EXERCISES, THINGS LIKE WALKING, HIKING, STAIR CLIMBING, INCLUDING RESISTANCE TRAINING. SO USING WEIGHTS, USING RESISTANCE BANDS OR EVEN BODYWEIGHT EXERCISES LIKE SQUATS AND LUNGES, BALANCE EXERCISES ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE THESE HELP US REDUCE OUR RISK OF FALLS WHICH IS WHICH? WHICH IS A COMMON CONCERN FOR OLDER ADULTS AND THUS REDUCES THE RISK OF FRACTURE FLEXIBILITY AND STRETCHING. YOU KNOW, THIS HELPS IMPROVE OUR RANGE OF MOTION. CAN ALLEVIATE JOINT STIFFNESS. YOU KNOW, LOW IMPACT ACTIVITIES ARE IMPORTANT. THESE IMPROVE OUR CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH BUT CAN BE EASIER ON THE JOINT AND EVEN DOING EXERCISES THAT MIMIC EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES LIKE SQUATTING, REACHING, LIFTING AND STEPPING. THESE CAN HELP MAINTAIN OUR INDEPENDENCE AND IMPROVE OUR OVERALL FUNCTION AND CAPACITY. DOCTOR PERRY, YOU MENTIONED STRETCHING THERE. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO DO THAT BEFORE EXERCISE? OR EVEN IF MAYBE YOU’RE NOT GOING TO EXERCISE WHEN YOU JUST WAKE UP IN THE MORNING? YEAH. THAT’S GREAT. YOU KNOW, STRETCHING PLAYS A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN MAINTAINING OUR JOINT AND OUR MUSCLE HEALTH, BUT IT’S IMPORTANT TO REALLY VARIES DEPENDING ON THE TIMING AND TYPE OF ACTIVITY. SO WHEN WE THINK OF STRETCHING WE WE THINK OF, YOU KNOW, HOLDING A STATIC STRETCH FOR A PERIOD 15 SECONDS TO 60S. AND THIS CAN BE REALLY IMPORTANT. IT IMPROVES OUR FLEXIBILITY. IT CAN BE USEFUL AFTER WORKOUTS OR DURING A COOLDOWN PERIOD. BUT CONTRARY TO WHAT WE ALL DID GROWING UP, IT’S REALLY NOT RECOMMENDED IMMEDIATELY BEFORE ACTIVITIES AS IT CAN ACTUALLY REDUCE OUR PERFORMANCE. OUR MUSCLE STRENGTH, AND OUR POWER. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, DYNAMICALLY WARMING UP. SO MOVING YOUR BODY THROUGH A RANGE OF MOTION, MIMICKING THE ACTIVITY YOU’RE ABOUT TO PERFORM. THIS IS WHAT PREPARES THE BODY FOR EXERCISE, INCREASES OUR HEART RATE, INCREASES OUR CIRCULATION, ENHANCES OUR MUSCLE PERFORMANCE, AND COORDINATION, AND REDUCES THE RISK OF INJURY MORE EFFECTIVELY THAN STATIC STRETCHING ALONE.
