Experts warn how high humidity can impact bone and joint health

There is an increased risk of infections during the monsoon season due to heightened bacterial activity. If there is a wound or a cut in the body, bacteria or germs can travel inside the bloodstream and into the bones, increasing the risk of infections.

Dr Neeraj Godara, Consultant Hand, Wrist & Reconstructive Microsurgery at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Dwarka, has highlighted the need for caution during this time.

“Microbial activity can make wounds and cuts prone to infection, leading to bone infection. Moisture softens the skin, making it more susceptible to damage, which serves as an entry point for bacteria. It can also compromise the body’s immune system, making it less effective in fighting the infection,” Dr Godara explained.

With the onset of the monsoon season, the rapid changes in temperature, precipitation, and air pressure can cause many people to experience joint discomfort, muscle stiffness, and injury pain as well.

High humidity levels contribute to this by making it harder for the body to circulate blood, as the humidity can thicken the blood and increase blood pressure in blood vessels.

Dr Varsha Bhatt, Rheumatologist, Apollo Clinic, Wanowrie, Pune, said that during monsoon, people who have rheumatoid arthritis (inflammation in joints) can experience even more inflammation, especially if they’ve had diseases like dengue or chikungunya.

Post-viral arthritis may last from as short as a few weeks to as long as 6 months. In some cases, it may even become chronic, in which case long-term medication may be needed.

Flooded areas are particularly problematic, as they can harbour bacteria that contaminate wounds and increase the rate of infection.

“Avoid walking barefoot in these areas, as it can lead to cuts, making it easy for bacteria to enter,” Dr Godara advised. Wearing protective clothing and maintaining overall hygiene are crucial steps in preventing infections, the expert said.

Dr Bhatt said to avoid self-medicating as it could be harmful. In case of flare-ups in the joints, one should visit a doctor immediately.

In the case of severe pain in the joints and muscles, one should visit a healthcare professional to avoid infections.
